Indications of Generic Vasotec
Vasotec or enalapril belongs to a group of drugs which are known as ACE inhibitors or angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors.
Vasotec is primarily used for the treatment of: high blood pressure or hypertension; kidney problems which are caused by diabetes; and congestive heart failure. It can also be used to improve survival after experiencing a heart attack.
Vasotec can also be prescribed by a doctor for other medical conditions.
Important Information about Generic Vasotec
You should not use Vasotec if you have an allergy to enalapril or to other ACE inhibitors like benazepril, captopril, fosinopril, moexipril, perindopril, quinapril, ramipril, lisinopril or trandolapril.
Before taking Vasotec, let your doctor know if you are taking other medications such as gold injections, lithium, potassium supplements, salt substitutes which contain potassium, aspirin, NSAIDs and diuretics. If you are taking any of these, you might not be allowed to take Vasotec or your dose might be adjusted.
You should also inform your doctor if you have: kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, connective tissue disease or heart disease. If you have any of these or other medical conditions, your doctor might lower your dose or monitor your condition more closely.
To ensure that this medication is helping your condition, your blood pressure might be checked by your doctor periodically. You may also be required to undergo several other tests regularly. Do not miss any scheduled doctor’s visits.
While you are taking Vasotec, be sure to drink plenty of water.
If you are going to have surgery, let your surgeon know that you are taking Vasotec. You might be told to temporarily stop taking Vasotec.
If you are using Vasotec for the treatment of high blood pressure, you should use it even when you are feeling better, as it has been prescribed. This is because high blood pressure usually does not have any symptoms.
Vasotec can cause some side effects which could impair your reactions or your thinking. Avoid drinking alcohol and avoid driving or doing anything which requires you to be alert unless you are already aware of the effects of the medication on you.
Vasotec belongs to the FDA pregnancy category D, which means that it may cause birth defects in an unborn child. You should inform your doctor if you are pregnant, are trying to get pregnant or are breastfeeding.
