Tenormin or atenolol belongs to a group of drugs which are known as beta-blockers. It affects the functioning of the heart and the circulation of blood.

Tenormin is primarily used for the treatment of angina or chest pain and hypertension or high blood pressure. It can also be used for the treatment or the prevention of heart attacks.

Tenormin can also be used for other purposes as determined by your doctor.

Important information about Tenormin

You should not use Tenormin if you have an allergy to atenolol.

You should not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor first as suddenly stopping could worsen your condition.

If you need to undergo surgery, you would probably have to temporarily stop taking Tenormin. Inform your surgeon beforehand that you are taking this medication.

Because Tenormin cam cause your thinking and reactions to be impaired, avoid driving or doing activities that require you to be fully alert unless you already know how the medication affects you.

You should also avoid drinking alcohol, as alcohol can increase the dizziness and drowsiness caused by the medication.

Tenormin is usually prescribed as a part of a program designed to treat hypertension or high blood pressure that would include guidelines for your diet, exercise routine and weight control efforts. Be sure to follow any instructions given to you by your doctor.

If you are taking Tenormin for your high blood pressure, you should continue taking it even when you feel well as high blood pressure usually has no symptoms.

Inform your doctor of any other conditions you have, particularly if you have been diagnosed with or are being treated for: asthma; bronchitis; emphysema; low blood pressure; diabetes; a heart problem such as slow heart rate, sick sinus syndrome or heart block, congestive heart failure; liver disease; kidney disease; depression; a thyroid disorder; pheochromocytoma; myasthenia gravis; or circulation problems. If you have any of these, you may be advised against taking Tenormin or your dose might have to be lowered.

Tell your doctor of other medications that you are already taking such as allergy medications, amiodarone, clonidine, digoxin, disopyramide, guanabenz, MAOIs or monoamine oxidase inhibitors, diabetes medications, heart medications, asthma medications, cold medications or diet pills to be sure that they would not interact with Tenormin.

Tenormin belongs to the FDA pregnancy category D, which means that it can cause harm to a developing baby. You should not use Tenormin if you are already pregnant. Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or are trying to get pregnant. Your doctor might advise you to use an effective form of birth control while using Tenormin. Also tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding before taking Tenormin.
