Indications for Generic Coumadin

Coumadin or warfarin sodium is a blood thinner or an anticoagulant. It is commonly prescribed for the: prevention or treatment of a blood clot that formed in the lungs or in a blood vessel; prevention or treatment of blood clots which are associated with heart conditions; prevention of blood clot formation in the blood vessels in the body following a heart attack; reduction of the risk of death or stroke or another heart attack following a heart attack.

Important Information about Generic Coumadin

Coumadin should not be used if you have an allergy to warfarin sodium or to any of its ingredients.

The most serious risks which are associated with the use of Coumadin would be hemorrhage of tissues or organs and necrosis or gangrene, which is the destruction of skin tissue. These, however, are not very common and the risk is generally dependent on the length and dosage of Coumadin treatment.

Your doctor may recommend that you avoid alcohol, aspirin and other salicylates, and increased consumption of foods which are rich in vitamin K, as these could counteract the effects of Coumadin. Tell your doctor about the medications, supplements and herbal products that you are taking to ensure that they would not interact with Coumadin.

Inform your doctor if you are already receiving treatment for any medical condition especially if you have: an intestinal disorder or an infectious disease; a personal or family history of having recurrent blood clot disorders; an inflammation of a blood vessel; an implanted catheter; severe diabetes; kidney or liver dysfunction; high blood pressure; a blood disorder called polycythemia vera; or a recent trauma or injury which could result to internal bleeding. If you have these or other medical conditions, your physician may recommend a lower dosage.

If you are taking Coumadin, make sure to carry along an ID or tag with you that would indicate you are using the drug, in case you get into an emergency medical situation.

While receiving Coumadin treatment, it is also advisable to avoid engaging in activities and sports that could cause an injury. The effects of Coumadin can be felt for two to five days after stopping treatment so it is important to remain cautious.

Coumadin or warfarin sodium belongs to the FDA pregnancy category X which means that it has been studied to cause birth defects. It should not be taken if you are pregnant or are trying to get pregnant or are breastfeeding without consulting your doctor first.
Dosage and Administration of Generic Coumadin

Only take Coumadin or warfarin sodium as it has been exactly prescribed for you.

If you miss a dose of Coumadin, make sure that you would be taking it as soon as possible and then go right back following your regular schedule. However, if you remember that you missed a dose a day after, you can just skip that dose completely and follow your regular dosing schedule. Never take additional medication to make up for the doses that you have missed.

If you overdose or suspect an overdose of Coumadin, make sure to get emergency medical attention immediately.

Possible Side Effects of Generic Coumadin

Some of the side effects which have been associated with the use of Coumadin or warfarin sodium would include nausea, stomach or abdominal pain, loss of appetite and vomiting. These are only temporary and should go away on their own. However, if they do not or if you experience more serious side effects including difficulty in breathing or swallowing, paralysis, tingling, numbness, low blood pressure, unexplained shock, weakness and unexplained swelling, it is important to get emergency medical attention right away. They could indicate hemorrhage or internal bleeding.

Coumadin may also cause your urine to become reddish-orange.
