Indications for Generic Doxazosin

Doxazosin belongs to a group of drugs which are known as alpha-adrenergic blockers. It works through relaxing and expanding the arteries and veins, thus improving blood flow. It also relaxes the muscles of the prostate and the bladder neck, allowing easier urination.

Doxazosin is prescribed for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia or enlarged prostate and hypertension or high blood pressure.

Doxazosin can also be used for other medical conditions as determined by your doctor.

Important Information about Generic Doxazosin

You should not use doxazosin if you have an allergy to any of its ingredients or to similar medications like prazosin, terazosin or tamsulosin. Also make sure to inform your physician of any other drug allergies you have.

Inform your doctor of all medications that you are using especially tadalafil, sildenafil and vardenafil to make sure they would not interact with doxazosin. Also make sure to tell your doctor first before taking any herbal product, supplement and prescription or non-prescription medication while taking doxazosin.

Note that doxazosin lowers blood pressure, causing fainting or dizziness, particularly when you first take it or when you begin taking the medication again. To prevent this from happening, try taking the first dose at bedtime. If it causes lightheadedness, you could continue taking it at bedtime.

If you would be undergoing cataract surgery, inform your doctor beforehand that you are taking doxazosin, as this medication could affect the pupils during the surgery. However, do not stop taking it unless your surgeon has told you to.

To make sure that the medication is improving your condition, your doctor may require you to come in regularly for assessments and testing. Try not to miss any of your scheduled appointments with your doctor.

If you are taking doxazosin to treat your high blood pressure, you should keep taking it even when you are already feeling fine. This is because high blood pressure does not usually show any symptoms.

Tell your doctor off any medical conditions that you are receiving treatment for especially if you have a prostate cancer history or liver disease. If you do, your dose might need to be lowered.

Doxazosin belongs to the FDA pregnancy category C, which means that its effects to an unborn baby have not been adequately studied. Make sure to tell your doctor if you are already pregnant, are trying to get pregnant or are breastfeeding.

Dosage and Administration of Generic Doxazosin

Doxazosin should only be taken as it has been prescribed for you by your physician. Do not take it in a larger dose or for a longer period than what has been recommended for you. Follow the exact dosing instructions on your prescription label.

Possible Side Effects of Generic Doxazosin

There are some side effects which are associated with the use of Doxazosin which includes weakness, dizziness, headache, stomach pain and diarrhea. These are just temporary side effects and should go away on their own. However, if they do not or if they worsen or if you begin experiencing more serious side effects like a fast heartbeat fainting, lightheadedness, swelling in the hands, feet or ankles or prolonged erection, make sure to contact your physician right away.

Avoid drinking alcohol while receiving treatment with doxazosin as doing so could increase the side effects of the medication.
