Indications for Generic Atacand

Atacand or candesartan cilexetil is a type of blood pressure medication which works through
blocking the effects angiotensin II. Angiotensin II is a hormone which makes the blood vessels contract, causing blood pressure to go up. Atacand helps in relaxing and expanding the blood vessels so that blood pressure can drop. It can be used alone or in combination with other medications for lowering blood pressure.

Keep in mind that Atacand cannot cure high blood pressure or hypertension; it just keeps the condition under control.

Important Information about Generic Atacand

You should not use Atacand if you have an allergy to candesartan cilexetil.

Atacand should be taken regularly so that it can be effective. Because blood pressure gradually declines, it could take several weeks before you start feeling the effects of Atacand. Continue taking this medication as your doctor has directed even if you are already feeling better as having high blood pressure may sometimes show no symptoms.

When you first start taking Atacand, your blood pressure might suddenly drop. This is more likely to happen if you are using water pills or diuretics which have caused the water supply of your body to be depleted. If you start experiencing some of the symptoms of severely low blood pressure including light-headedness, fainting and dizziness, call your doctor. Your doctor might need to adjust your dosage.

Inform your doctor if you have any other medical condition especially if you have liver disease, kidney disease, heart disease and diabetes. There are some conditions which may call for a dose adjustment.

Atacand belongs to the FDA pregnancy category D which means that this medication can cause potential harm to an unborn child. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, are planning to get pregnant, get pregnant during treatment or are breastfeeding a baby. Your doctor might order a test for you to undergo to make sure that you are not pregnant before starting treatment. He may also advise you to use an effective form of birth control while undergoing treatment. If you do get pregnant during treatment, you will need to stop using Atacand immediately. 

If you are taking other drugs or medication, tell your doctor to make sure that none of them will be interacting with Atacand.

Dosage and Administration of Generic Atacand

Atacand or candesartan cilexetil should be taken as it has been prescribed for you by your doctor. You should not take it in a larger dose or for a longer period of time. Follow the directions written on your prescription label.

Atacand can be taken with or without meals.

Try to take each dose of Atacand at around the same time daily so that it would be easier to remember.

If you miss a dose, make sure that you would be taking it as soon as you can, but if the next dose is almost up, you can just skip the one that you missed and then just go back to you regular schedule. You should never take two doses together.

If you overdose on Atacand, make sure to get emergency medical assistance right away. Some of the symptoms of an Atacand overdose include dizziness, abnormal heart rate and low blood pressure.

Possible Side Effects of Generic Atacand

Some of the side effects which are associated with the use of Atacand or candesartan cilexetil include back pain, respiratory tract infections and dizziness. These are only temporary and they should go away on their own but if they do not or if they worsen or if you start experiencing more serious side effects or an allergic reaction with the drug, seek emergency medical assistance and notify your doctor immediately.
